Austin Peay State University Announces Tom Cunningham Family Endowment for Business Students

CLARKSVILLE, TN – Austin Peay State University (APSU) alumna Tammy Cunningham (’86) has made a significant donation to establish the Tom Cunningham Family Endowment. This scholarship, named in honor of her late husband and APSU alumnus Tom Cunningham (’85), aims to support business students at APSU.

Eligibility Criteria for the Scholarship

To qualify for the scholarship, applicants must:

  • Be rising juniors or seniors
  • Be enrolled full-time as business majors
  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher
  • Have graduated from a Montgomery County, Tennessee high school
  • Submit a brief essay detailing their career goals

This scholarship will be awarded for one academic year.

A Lasting Legacy

Tammy expressed her gratitude to the friends, family, and colleagues who helped make the endowment possible. “Tom always believed that APSU and Clarksville were inseparable—that when you invest in one, you strengthen both,” she noted. “This scholarship honors that belief by supporting students who are rooted in this community and committed to building their futures here.”

The endowment reflects a relationship with APSU that has endured for over 40 years. KP Phillips, APSU Vice President for Alumni, Engagement, and Philanthropy, commented, “The Cunningham family has long contributed to our campus community. We appreciate this significant contribution and are eager to continue Tom’s legacy of helping others through this scholarship.”

Deep-rooted Connections

The Cunningham family’s ties to APSU trace back to Tom’s youth, where he was often seen attending basketball games with his brothers. Tom and Tammy met at a Greek mixer at APSU in 1982 and danced their first dance that night, leading to their marriage in 1987. Their family passionately supported APSU events, exemplified by their attendance at games and homecoming parades.

After graduating, Tom dedicated himself to fortifying Clarksville through various community initiatives. His notable contributions included mentoring aspiring entrepreneurs and developing projects to enhance the vibrancy of the town.

Community Commitment

The Cunninghams have been active in numerous community organizations, including United Way and the Clarksville Area Chamber of Commerce. Tom was instrumental in the development of the Clarksville Area YMCA and played a key role in family ventures like Old Glory Distilling Co. and Strawberry Alley Ale Works.

Following Tom’s passing in 2019, the Cunningham family continues to honor his legacy by contributing to the community. Their collective efforts include Matt’s leadership at Old Glory Distilling Co., Wes’s projects at Strawberry Alley, Nick’s work in economic development, and Kate’s role as a nurse supporting new mothers.

Conclusion

The Tom Cunningham Family Endowment not only serves to support APSU business students but also stands as a testament to Tom Cunningham’s enduring impact on the Clarksville community and the values he championed throughout his life.
