Upcoming Space Launch from Cape Canaveral
The mission is set to launch from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station aboard SpaceX’s Dragon capsule. NASA and SpaceX are targeting a launch time of 11:10 a.m., with weather conditions deemed 55% favorable.
Residents of Central Florida may experience sonic booms approximately eight minutes after launch as the Falcon 9 rocket’s booster returns to Earth.
Astronauts and Connection to the Community
The pilot for this mission is NASA astronaut Luke Delaney, a native of DeBary and a graduate of Deltona High School in Volusia County. Delaney expressed excitement about launching close to his hometown, stating, “It’s definitely near and dear to my heart.” He reminisced about watching space shuttle launches as a child and looks forward to witnessing it from a new perspective.
Students at Delaney’s former school will be participating in the event, as the school has declared “Luke Delaney Day.” They plan to host a watch party, and if conditions allow, students will step outside to witness the rocket launch.
Mission Details and Objectives
Delaney’s mission marks his first trip to space, where he will work alongside fellow NASA astronaut Jessica Watkins, Canadian astronaut Joshua Kutryk, and Russian cosmonaut Sergey Teteryatnikov. He emphasized the importance of studying how space affects the human body in preparation for future exploration missions.
Timeline to the Space Station
After launch, the spacecraft will take approximately eight hours to rendezvous with the International Space Station (ISS) and dock.
This mission, Crew-13, will be SpaceX’s 14th flight with NASA astronauts and the 13th crew rotation using SpaceX’s human space transportation system.
