A shortage of rockets is causing a dilemma for space technology firms.

Launch Crisis in the Satellite Industry

A looming crisis in the satellite launch industry has emerged as the number of available rockets dwindles, affecting the timely deployment of new satellites.

Historical Context

Just a year ago, satellite operators could expect to wait about 12 months for a launch. Today, that wait time has ballooned to 30 to 36 months—a shift that threatens many start-ups, according to Anatolii Papulov, CEO of UK space tech firm NewOrbit.

Factors Contributing to the Crisis

  1. Transition from Falcon 9: SpaceX is phasing out the Falcon 9, which has dominated the launch market. In 2025, it conducted 165 launches, a majority being for its Starlink project. However, it is no longer taking bookings beyond 2028 as it focuses on its new rocket, Starship.

  2. Market Dynamics: While Starship had a successful orbital test in September 2026, its availability for commercial launches remains uncertain. SpaceX may prioritize its lucrative Starlink operations over other commercial missions.

  3. Geopolitical Influences: The war in Ukraine has eliminated a significant chunk of the commercial launch market, previously handled by Russian rockets, primarily Soyuz. This has compounded existing constraints.

  4. Lack of Competitors: SpaceX’s closest competitor is Rocket Lab, which only launched 18 Electron rockets in 2025. Other companies, such as those led by Jeff Bezos (Blue Origin) and Amazon, are also tied up with their own projects, leaving the market with limited options.

  5. Regulatory Barriers: US and European satellites face restrictions on launching from Chinese rockets, creating further challenges for accessing launch opportunities.

The Future Landscape

With uncertainties ahead, the industry is at a crossroads. Should SpaceX’s Starship be made more widely available, the crisis may be alleviated. However, the worst-case scenario could leave many firms struggling without access to reliable launch services.

In conclusion, the satellite launch industry is currently experiencing significant challenges that could impact the future landscape of commercial space exploration.
