Record Diesel Prices Strain Utah Truckers
SALT LAKE CITY — Truckers in Utah are facing unprecedented challenges as diesel prices soar, with the cost per gallon reaching a record high of $6.60 on Thursday, according to AAA. This surge marks a significant increase from $3.73 just a year ago.
The rise in diesel prices is primarily attributed to geopolitical tensions, including the ongoing U.S. and Israeli conflict with Iran, which affects tanker navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. Additionally, attacks on Russian refining infrastructure have further disrupted oil exports.
Jamal Goldsmith, a trucking company owner in Utah, expressed concerns that if prices do not stabilize, he may have to shut down his business. He noted that many small trucking companies share similar worries, stating, “Whatever we’re making is going back to the truck, to pay for the fuel and all the expenses. After all that’s said and done, there’s very little for you.”
Goldsmith plans to reassess his company’s viability by the end of November, highlighting the dire situation facing the trucking industry amid escalating fuel costs.
