Study Suggests Diet Can Reverse Biological Age
A recent study from the University of Sydney indicates that adjusting your diet could potentially reverse your biological age in just weeks. The trial involved 104 participants aged 65 to 75, who were divided into four groups, each receiving a different type of meal over four weeks.
Meal Groups
- Semi-Vegetarian with High Fat
- Semi-Vegetarian with High Carbohydrates
- Omnivorous with High Fat
- Omnivorous with High Carbohydrates
Findings
-
Measurement of Biological Age: Researchers assessed participants’ biological age at the beginning and end of the trial using the Klemera-Doubal Method, which analyzes various biomarkers like insulin levels and cholesterol.
-
Results: The omnivorous group with high fat saw the least change, as their diet closely resembled what they had been eating initially.
-
However, the other three groups experienced a reduction in biological age, with the greatest improvements noted in the omnivorous group with higher carbohydrates and lower fat. Importantly, these carbohydrates were minimally processed; unhealthy options like white bread and chips did not yield positive results.
Conclusion
The findings support prior evidence that diets abundant in complex carbohydrates may enhance metabolic health and longevity. Dr. Caitlin Andrews, the study’s lead author, emphasized the importance of focusing on overall dietary quality and balance rather than strict restrictions. She noted that even small, sustainable dietary improvements can positively influence health as we age.
This study highlights the potential of dietary adjustments to significantly impact our physiology, encouraging a shift towards balanced, nutrient-rich meals.
