Rosholt fourth-graders launch yearlong NASA science initiative.

Rosholt Fourth-Graders Collaborate with NASA Scientists

By Patrick Lynn

ROSHOLT — Thirty-seven fourth-graders from Rosholt are embarking on an exciting journey with NASA scientists this school year through the NASA DISCOVERIES program. Kicking off with a hands-on introduction to Earth science at the Wisconsin Lions Foundation, students are set to engage in a yearlong project focused on collecting environmental data, studying weather patterns, and sharing their findings with experts and peers nationwide.

The program launched on September 24, with students participating in a virtual session with Tina Harte Ballinger, the program founder. They practiced observation skills and learned various measurement techniques.

Throughout the coming months, students will work in small groups called Crews. They will take surface temperature readings, observe cloud conditions, and gather significant data, culminating in presentations of their findings in May 2027. In addition, they will have the opportunity to engage virtually with NASA scientists, learning about their careers and scientific journeys.

Phillip Potter, public relations director for the Wisconsin Lions Foundation and instructor, emphasized the program’s impact: “This program gives our students the opportunity to see that science isn’t something that only happens in a laboratory or somewhere far away. They are collecting real data, working as a team, and connecting with scientists who can share their own journeys. We hope these experiences help students see the possibilities that are available to them.”

This marks the third year of the NASA DISCOVERIES program, which stands for Developing Interconnected STEM Communities of Vested Educational Relevance in Earth Science. The initiative is expanding to involve students from South Carolina and California this year.

The Wisconsin Lions Foundation provides instructors, supplies, and space for the Rosholt students, while NASA Langley Science Activation and NASA contractor ADNET Systems Inc. offer national support and oversight. Local businesses and community supporters also contribute by sponsoring lunches during the students’ visits.

For the Rosholt students, this program presents a unique opportunity to conduct meaningful scientific research within their community while connecting with professionals who have turned their curiosity for science into careers at NASA.
