Scientists Learn Bear’s Sex from Hair Strands
A grizzly bear in Alberta brushes against a snag, unknowingly leaving strands of hair behind. Researchers can analyze this hair to determine if the bear is male or female, and sometimes even if it is a mother with cubs.
Counting Bears Without Seeing Them
Scientists collect hair from these locations and analyze the DNA to estimate bear populations. While they can count how many different bears pass through an area, identifying specific characteristics such as age and sex requires more sophisticated methods.
The Importance of Knowing Bear Identity
Traditionally, to gather detailed information about bears, scientists needed to trap and collar them—a time-consuming process. The new approach may offer a more efficient way to understand bear populations.
How Hair Contains Secrets
Hair records hormonal messages related to stress, nutrition, and breeding. Researchers tested 16 hormones in grizzly bear hair, providing insights over time rather than a single snapshot like blood samples. This hormonal data can reveal crucial information about a bear’s reproductive status.
Finding Answers from Known Samples
Using archived hair samples from bears already captured, researchers trained a computer model to recognize patterns. They achieved an accuracy rate of 80% in determining the sex of adult bears and 94% accuracy overall for adults.
Implications for Wildlife Management
This method could transform wildlife management, allowing for a more comprehensive understanding of bear populations based on non-invasive sampling. As the researchers indicated, integrating hormonal data with existing DNA surveys can provide critical insights, helping conservationists make informed decisions regarding bear populations.
Ultimately, this scientific advancement illustrates the potential to monitor wildlife populations without direct interaction, protecting bears while expanding our knowledge of these magnificent creatures.
