Google’s Upcoming AI Data Center Could Be Located in Space

The text discusses the challenges faced by AI data centers on Earth, particularly highlighting a case where Kevin O’Leary had to reduce his Utah project due to local opposition. A recent UMass Amherst poll shows that only 1 in 9 Americans support new data centers in their communities.

In response to this challenge, Google is exploring the possibility of launching data centers into space. They plan to test a prototype satellite equipped with Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) in an initiative called Project Suncatcher. This project investigates the potential for AI computing clusters to operate in orbit, leveraging the significantly more potent solar power available in low Earth orbit compared to ground-based solar panels.

The satellite, developed in collaboration with Planet Labs, will launch aboard SpaceX’s Transporter-18 mission. Google aims to evaluate how the chips perform under the extreme conditions of space, including high radiation and temperature variations, as well as test a new cooling system suitable for a vacuum environment.

Experts caution that fully operational orbital data centers are still years away, but Google has plans for additional satellites in 2027 to further investigate communication technologies between future space-based computing clusters.
