UTHealth Houston collaborates with Exobiosphere on research in space environments.

UTHealth Houston has teamed up with Exobiosphere, a space biotechnology company, to enhance biomedical research using space-based technologies. This collaboration merges UTHealth’s expertise in antibody discovery, therapeutics, artificial intelligence, and biomedical studies with Exobiosphere’s capabilities in orbital research.

The partnership aims to explore how microgravity can accelerate scientific discovery and improve patient care on Earth. Bentley J. Bobrow, MD, emphasized the importance of bringing together academic researchers, clinicians, and industry leaders to leverage space conditions for biomedical advancement.

A new Texas Medical Center Space Medicine Lab will be established to facilitate space-based biomedical experiments, data analysis, and the translation of findings into practical health innovations. Led by Zhiqiang An, PhD, and Xiaoqian Jiang, PhD, the research will focus on space medicine, human spaceflight, antibody therapeutics, and AI-enabled biomedical research.

Exobiosphere’s Orbital High-Throughput Screening platform will enable standardized biomedical experiments in microgravity, creating valuable datasets that can enhance drug discovery. The collaboration will also utilize advanced data science and artificial intelligence to uncover insights into health and disease.

This initiative supports UTHealth’s Space Medicine program, enhances the university’s position in healthcare and space exploration, and aims to translate orbital discoveries into improved health outcomes on Earth. The partnership is expected to set the stage for future research projects and funding opportunities to advance innovation in this emerging field.
