The U.K. has established a new space unit, the Number 3 Space Effects Squadron, due to increasing threats from Russia and other adversaries in orbit. Air Chief Marshal Sir Harv Smyth emphasized concerns about Russia’s intentions in space, particularly previously reported stalking of British military satellites.
The British military has reportedly engaged in jamming or blocking foreign satellites, which raises legal questions under international law. While combating threats, it’s essential that actions comply with established treaties like the Outer Space Treaty.
This squadron operates alongside existing units that track and warn of space threats. Its focus will be on disrupting hostile actions, protecting U.K. satellites, and utilizing advanced technologies for electronic warfare.
The U.K.’s dependence on satellites is significant, contributing around 18% to the economy, according to the updated U.K. Space Strategy, which commits £7.8 billion to bolster the space sector by 2030.
Alongside Russia, concerns also extend to China’s expanding capabilities in space, with strategic implications for U.S. and global military operations. The new unit aims to safeguard British interests and deter potential conflicts in space while adhering to international laws.
