Sophomore marketing major Kendra Mueller recently won the Vol Court competition, held on September 16, outpacing 22 competitors in the event designed to encourage students to present their business ideas. Sponsored by the Anderson Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the Haslam College of Business, Vol Court aims to push students beyond their classroom experiences.
Participants deliver a 90-second elevator pitch without slides, using props instead. Judges from Knoxville’s startup community assess the pitches, with a total prize pool of $3,000. Mueller took home $1,500 for her startup, WarmWave, a portable heating device and app. This win follows her successful participation in other competitions in Minnesota prior to her transfer to the University of Tennessee.
Mueller emphasized the importance of the Entrepreneurship Center, stating, “Give me all you got,” referring to the resources and support available to aspiring entrepreneurs. The event’s structure included feedback sessions and insights from local entrepreneurs, enhancing the learning experience.
Second place was awarded to senior students Charlie Sarafian and Jack Foster for their project, Caspair.TV, which connects club sports footage with viewers and advertisers. Senior Katrina Tsiftilis claimed third place with her innovation, CalmEars, an earpiece designed to block specific noises.
Judges noted the significance of effective communication, preparation, and the ability to generate excitement about the ideas presented. The recent addition of feedback sessions and connections with successful alumni were highlighted as valuable resources for contestants.
Mueller expressed gratitude for the opportunity and excitement about future competitions, planning to use her prize money to develop a prototype for her product, reflecting her dedication to her studies and entrepreneurial ambitions.
