Kathryn Swank: A Beacon of Inspiration in Education

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Kathryn Swank, a fifth-grade teacher at Meadowbrook Elementary, embodies a profound commitment to education. Recently named South Dakota’s Region 5 Teacher of the Year, she emerged as one of five candidates vying for the state-wide title, an honor that ultimately went to Christina Berger from Harrisburg’s Liberty Elementary.

Swank cherishes the support of her community, stating, “This process has been so powerful because it’s really reminded me of why I continue to stay. I’m here because I have an amazing community that lifts me up.”

As Swank embarks on her fourth year at Meadowbrook—marking her 21st year in the teaching profession—she emphasizes the importance of teamwork among educators. “I absolutely love the people I work with every day… they’re always willing to try new things,” she said.

Swank understands the transitional period of fifth grade, noting that her students are not just preparing for middle school but also discovering their identities. “You just see them grow up so much in a year,” she reflected.

Interestingly, teaching was not her initial career plan. Growing up as the daughter of an art teacher in Brandon, Swank dreamed of becoming an artist. However, after discovering her passion for teaching during a two-year commitment to the Rosebud Reservation, she found fulfillment connecting with students and embracing new cultures.

A pivotal moment occurred during her first year when a young boy, unfamiliar with her, recognized her as “the teacher that smiles a lot.” This realization solidified her identity as a positive and engaging educator.

Swank’s journey included six years in Rosebud and later roles as a literacy coach, before finding her way back to the classroom amidst the pandemic’s challenges. Opting to stay close to her family in Rapid City led her to Meadowbrook, a place she describes as a family in itself.

Her classroom environment promotes bonding and support. Each day starts with calming breaths and a commitment chant between her and her students, fostering a sense of safety and mutual responsibility.

Eager to enhance her students’ experiences, Swank initiated a garden project with support from the Rapid City Public School Foundation and local businesses, emphasizing the collaborative spirit of the community.

Swank’s jubilance shines through in her work, and she is dedicated to making a lasting impact on her students’ lives. “It’s an incredible feeling to feel so supported by not just our families, but the whole community,” she concluded, affirming her path in education.
