Google Prepares to Send Fridge-Sized ‘MVP’ into Orbit

Google is set to test an AI data center in orbit, sending a satellite called MVP into space aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. This initiative, known as Project Suncatcher, aims to explore the potential of future data centers operating above Earth, leveraging solar energy while sidestepping some limitations faced by terrestrial facilities.

MVP, about the size of a refrigerator, will conduct simple queries for around a year. During this period, Google will assess how well its custom chips can withstand space conditions, such as radiation and extreme temperatures. Although commercially viable outcomes are not expected for years, Google is already contemplating a fleet of satellites to establish a comprehensive orbital data center.

Challenges such as cosmic radiation and the high costs of satellite launches may hinder broad adoption. However, insurance companies could benefit as they look to find new opportunities in this emerging domain.
