Derek ‘Sway’ Safo, a fixture in British rap, passed away in Ghana after battling Hodgkin lymphoma. He leaves behind four children and a legacy of inspiration through his music and the artists he supported.
I fondly recall meeting Sway outside London’s Deal Real in 2015 after a panel discussion on Black British music that I hosted. He cared deeply about mentoring the next generation of musicians and ensured they valued their worth without being swayed by big labels.
Proud of his Ghanaian heritage, Sway prominently featured both Ghana and UK flags in his works. His debut album, This Is My Demo, helped cement UK hip-hop in a genre often overshadowed by grime, demonstrating that inclusivity is key in a diverse culture.
His impact is evident through artists like Chip, who acknowledged Sway’s early support: “Before Wiley, I’d say Sway. He hosted my first mixtape when I was 14.” This illustrates Sway’s role in nurturing talent and paving the way for others in the industry.
Fly high, Little Derek… May you rest in peace.
Cleo Sol’s soulful voice can melt hearts, as heard in her latest album Gentlewoman. Her direct approach resonates with listeners, particularly on the title track, where she addresses fears and insecurities that many men face, offering an understanding voice in a world that often suppresses emotions.
On the topic of UK Poo, I’ve held back from commenting, but we need to stop promoting this trend. Savvy’s track “Slap Me Again” is catchy yet lacks substance. While potential exists, it’s crucial to prioritize quality over going viral.
Headie One makes a return with MMM (Monday Marathon Music), exploring themes of fame and life experiences through a mix of street storytelling and trap beats. Collaborations with various artists elevate the album, which I rate 4/5.
Chy Cartier continues to stand out with confidence. Her song “YO!” recently gained traction on TikTok, thanks to an innovative remix by RoESS. The track’s popularity reflects her resonance with audiences and the power of social media to amplify emerging talent.
