The renovation of the John Pappajohn Business Building at the University of Iowa’s Tippie College of Business is a significant $60 million project aimed at accommodating the growing student population. With construction beginning on August 18 and slated for completion by Summer 2028, the expansion will increase the building’s size by 33%, adding over 72,000 square feet.
This expansion comes in response to a surge in enrollment, with current numbers reaching nearly 4,600 undergraduate students—up from a capacity designed for 1,600 in 1994. Dean Amy Kristof-Brown emphasized the project’s necessity and the decision to expand into the adjacent Gilmore Hall as a cost-effective solution, with 90% of funding sourced from private donations.
Major features of the renovation will include a 150-person event space, experiential labs, new gathering areas, and AI-enhanced labs designed to improve student learning experiences. Kristof-Brown and other speakers at a recent event highlighted the student-focused nature of the renovations, aiming to foster an environment that retains the Tippie College’s close-knit identity amidst growth. Students expressed enthusiasm for the new spaces and improved opportunities that the renovation promises to bring.
