Missoula County’s Temporary Safe Outdoor Space Continues with New Partnership
Missoula County has renewed operations of its Temporary Safe Outdoor Space (TSOS) by partnering with the Poverello Center. This site, which has been functioning for six years, provides a secure environment for individuals experiencing homelessness who are not currently accessing other services.
Previously operated by Hope Rescue Mission, the TSOS will now benefit from the Poverello Center’s management. The initiative began in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and has become a model for connecting individuals to sustainable housing resources. Located near the detention facility, it offers 30 hard-sided shelters equipped with essential amenities such as beds, electricity, and climate control.
Jill Bonny, executive director of the Poverello Center, emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing homelessness, stating that the TSOS demonstrates what can be accomplished through community partnership. The program aims to assist around 35 to 40 residents at a time, with plans to resume moving new residents in starting November 1.
The two-year, $800,000 agreement with the Poverello Center will be funded through the return of mental health funding previously loaned to Western Montana Mental Health Center.
