Volvo Cars selects VW margin executive to replace Samuelsson.

Volvo Cars has announced that Klaus Zellmer, currently the CEO of Škoda, will take over as President and Chief Executive by October 1, 2027. This delayed transition allows current CEO Håkan Samuelsson to ensure a seamless handover while implementing a new strategy focused on a 13-model electrified product offensive, designed to improve the company’s operating margin.

Zellmer, with nearly 30 years of experience in the Volkswagen Group, has a solid background, having notably led both Porsche’s German and North American operations and overseen Škoda’s successful performance in recent years. His predecessor, Jim Rowan, was ousted due to issues with software delivery and a faltering commitment to exclusively selling EVs by 2030. Samuelsson was brought back to stabilize the company, launching a cost-cutting initiative and restructuring plans.

The lengthy transition period is intended to allow Samuelsson to embed the new strategy before Zellmer’s arrival. Under Zellmer’s leadership, Volvo aims to boost parts commonality with Geely and expand its electric vehicle offerings, as the company pivots amid changing market demands. Zellmer recognizes the substantial challenge ahead, as Volvo continues to evolve its identity and operations.
