Amazon to allocate $1.9 billion towards delivery partnership initiative

Amazon is set to invest an additional $1.9 billion into its Delivery Service Partner (DSP) program by 2027. This initiative aims to enhance compensation for delivery drivers, targeting an average pay of nearly $24 per hour, while also investing in safety and AI-driven technologies.

Over the program’s eight years, Amazon has put forth $21.7 billion to support DSPs and their teams. Recent investments have reportedly raised average driver pay by 16% across the nation. Each DSP sets its own compensation and offers benefits like health care, paid time off, and, for some, 401(k) plans and tuition reimbursement.

Safety remains a key priority, with over $543 million allocated since 2022 to various safety initiatives. Consequently, serious vehicle crashes in the delivery network decreased by over 23% last year. Amazon is now deploying surround-view cameras in Rivian electric delivery vehicles to enhance safety and is integrating dynamic hazard alerts in its delivery app to improve real-time navigation.

Artificial intelligence is also playing a substantial role in optimizing last-mile operations. Amazon’s Wellspring AI technology has mapped extensive delivery data, providing detailed models of delivery locations. Additionally, the company is expanding its Smart Delivery Glasses for drivers, which enhance navigation and delivery processes with new features.

Beyond operational improvements, Amazon is pledging $70 million over five years for community initiatives, including the Amazon Local Good program, which facilitates the donation of essential items through its delivery network.

Overall, the DSP program has developed into a significant network of small businesses contributing to Amazon’s delivery operations.
