Darlo’s Auto Shop Celebrates 40 Years of Service
SIOUX CENTER—Darlo’s Auto Shop is celebrating a significant milestone—its 40th anniversary on September 19. Owner Darlo Mulder reflects on the pride he takes in running a successful business that has provided stability for him and his family. Located at 152 N. Main Ave. in Sioux Center, the shop has become a cornerstone of the community.
Mulder, now 61, initially had no interest in cars during high school. However, after showing a natural aptitude for auto mechanics, he shifted his career path from truck driving, influenced by a heartfelt conversation with his father. Following his father’s advice led him to enroll in auto mechanics courses, but finding a job post-graduation proved challenging due to a lack of experience.
Determined, Mulder began fixing cars for friends and family in his parents’ driveway, gradually building a small client base. With the support from a local NAPA parts store employee, he secured a space behind the store to officially launch Darlo’s Auto Shop on September 19, 1986.
Darlo’s Auto Shop has adapted over the years, maintaining a personal touch that customers appreciate. Here, clients interact directly with Mulder—the owner and mechanic. The shop handles various auto repair needs, though Mulder has shifted focus away from larger jobs due to time constraints.
The evolution of the auto industry presents challenges, particularly with increasingly complex vehicles and the associated costs of necessary tools and equipment. Despite these hurdles, Mulder’s perseverance and commitment to continuous learning have been vital to his success.
With the support of loyal customers and the community, Mulder looks forward to continuing his work for another decade. “I’ve got through the hard times; 40 years later, I’m still here turning wrenches and trying to make a living. I’m proud of that,” Mulder stated.
Conclusion
Darlo’s Auto Shop is a testament to hard work, resilience, and community spirit, marking 40 years of service with aspirations for many more.
