Kauai Businesses Experience a Dip in Tourism While the Island Bounces Back from Hurricane Lowell

Kauai’s businesses are facing severe challenges following Hurricane Lowell, with significant drops in tourism leading to layoffs and closures. Cadena Ragsdale, of Kauai Fresh Fish, reported a 70% decline in sales, forcing her to lay off her entire team except one. The impact extends across the island, affecting coffee shops and food businesses like Java Kai Kauai and The Musubi Truck Kauai, which also had to make layoffs and close locations due to decreased customer numbers and operational issues.

Local leaders emphasize the need for cautious strategies in welcoming visitors while prioritizing recovery. Kauai Mayor Derek Kawakami highlighted that certain areas, especially the North Shore, remain disaster zones and are closed to visitors. Business owners are urgently seeking information about potential financial support and state emergency declarations to aid recovery efforts, as they navigate the balance between attracting tourists and rebuilding their communities. Lawmakers are set to convene to discuss funding for recovery.
