Hyundai-Posco Louisiana Steel (HPLS), a collaboration between Hyundai Steel Company and Posco Group, has started constructing a new integrated steel mill in Louisiana with a staggering investment of $5.8 billion. This facility, located on a 728-hectare site in the RiverPlex MegaPark of Ascension Parish, is noted as the first electric arc furnace plant of its kind in the U.S.
Key details about the project include:
- Investment Distribution: HPLS will cover 50% of the capital, Posco 20%, while Hyundai and Kia will contribute 15% each.
- Production Goals: The plant aims to produce low-carbon steel sheets primarily for automakers, especially for the Hyundai Motor Group (HMG). It is projected to begin production in the first quarter of 2029, with an initial capacity of 2.7 million metric tons annually. The plant will create over 1,300 direct jobs and an additional 4,100 indirect jobs.
- Environmental Impact: HPLS emphasizes that the new facility will produce steel with 70% fewer CO2 emissions compared to traditional blast furnace plants.
- Logistics and Access: Situated near the Mississippi River, the plant will benefit from access to deep-water ports, railroads, and major highways, optimizing supply chain logistics for both raw materials and finished products across North America.
This investment aligns with South Korea’s pledge to put $350 billion into the U.S. as part of a trade agreement from 2025. HMG had also committed $26 billion in investments last year. HMG Chairman Chung Eui-sun highlighted that this facility will produce advanced steel products that will benefit not only Hyundai but other automotive manufacturers as well.
