Auburn Hills, Southfield, MI – Governor Gretchen Whitmer recently announced two significant business expansions in Oakland County. These expansions will lead to over $16 million in capital investment and the creation of at least 110 new jobs, further bolstering the state’s dynamic automotive sector.

“Michigan is on the move and open for business,” said Governor Whitmer. “Today’s announcement will create 110 new good-paying jobs and solidify Michigan as the premier place for innovation and development in the automotive industry.”

The Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) highlighted Michigan’s long-standing leadership in the automotive industry. Matt McCauley, Senior Vice President of Regional Development at the MEDC, commended both Horse Powertrain and AirBoss Defense Group for their investments.

AirBoss Defense Group Expansion

AirBoss Defense Group, LLC, located in Auburn Hills, specializes in solutions for military and emergency personnel. To meet the rising demand for protective technologies, ADG plans to establish a CBRN Center for Excellence. The facility will integrate production, R&D, and executive operations and is expected to involve a capital investment of $15 million, creating up to 78 new jobs.

The project has received a $300,000 performance-based grant from the Michigan Strategic Fund.

John Johns, president of ADG, expressed gratitude for the support from the MEDC: “This investment will enhance our ability to develop next-generation survivability solutions.”

Horse Powertrain USA Expansion

Horse Powertrain USA Inc. is also making strides by establishing its North American operations center in Southfield. Backed by a $260,000 MEDC grant, this project will generate a capital investment of approximately $1.06 million and create at least 32 jobs.

Thomas Lewis, president of Horse Powertrain USA, said, “This move allows us to directly support local automakers by collaborating with them in deploying our next-gen powertrains.”

By choosing to expand in Michigan, Horse Powertrain aims to leverage the state’s rich automotive history and skilled workforce.

Community and Economic Impact

Local leadership praised these expansions, recognizing the potential for job creation and economic growth. Mayor Eugene Hawkins of Auburn Hills noted the investment’s significance for the community and its defense sector.

“Welcoming these companies is a major win for our region,” said David Coulter, Oakland County Executive. “This investment will strengthen our local economy, providing high-paying jobs and new opportunities.”

Both expansions demonstrate Michigan’s commitment to innovation and the automotive industry’s future, solidifying its status as a global leader in engineering and manufacturing.
