The United States Space Force (USSF) has announced a new Interservice Transfer (IST) program, allowing service members from the Air Force, Army, Navy, and Marine Corps to transfer into the USSF. The application window for FY27 opened on September 15 and will remain open until October 2, 2026. However, it’s important to note that reserve and National Guard members, as well as Coast Guard and Merchant Marine personnel, are not eligible for this program.
The USSF was established on December 20, 2019, making it the first new branch of the armed services since 1947. Its mission includes organizing, training, and equipping personnel to protect U.S. and allied interests in space.
In another initiative, President Trump recently signed an executive order to establish a U.S. Space Academy aimed at training future space leaders. The academy will serve students entering the Space Force, as well as those interested in NASA and the civilian space industry. States like Florida, Texas, and Alabama are expected to compete to host the academy, which aims to welcome its first class in 2028.
