The i.g. Burton Auto Group, led by fifth-generation President Charlie Burton, has recently acquired Willis Ford in Smyrna, marking its first venture into the Ford franchise. The dealership, now renamed i.g. Burton Ford of Smyrna, expands the company’s reach to 16 locations across Delaware and Maryland.
Burton expressed excitement about adding Ford to their portfolio, citing the brand’s solid product range and fleet offerings as a perfect match for the company’s existing services. The acquisition enhances their presence in Smyrna, where they already operate a Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram dealership.
The Willis family announced the bittersweet closure of Willis Ford but reaffirmed their commitment to serving the community through Willis Chevrolet. Burton highlighted the dealership’s established customer base and experienced workforce as significant factors in their decision to acquire it. Current employees have the option to remain under the new management.
The dealership will continue offering a full range of Ford vehicles and services, bolstered by the leadership of Vice President MJ Lofland, who will oversee the transition. This move is part of i.g. Burton’s ongoing expansion strategy, with their portfolio now showcasing a diverse range of brands and services, including their recent addition of Toyota in March 2024. Founded in 1908, i.g. Burton has evolved from a single dealership into a prominent regional automotive group.
