Funding Boost for AI Research Aimed at Enhancing K-12 STEM Education

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (Carolina) continues to advance AI-driven educational tools with renewed support from the National Science Foundation (NSF). The NSF has extended a $20 million grant for the AI Institute for Engaged Learning at NC State University, which is a collaboration among several universities, including Carolina.

Led by Mohit Bansal, a distinguished professor in computer science, the institute focuses on enhancing STEM education for K-12 students through AI technologies. The research aims to create interactive and personalized learning experiences, including developing AI tools that adapt to individual student needs.

Since its inception, the institute has successfully launched narrative-centered learning environments and innovative frameworks like EngageVP, which analyzes student interactions using AI. The new phase of research will further refine these tools to enable teachers to craft engaging lessons more efficiently.

Magnus Egerstedt, Carolina’s executive vice chancellor and provost, emphasized the importance of connecting AI advancements with educational purposes, expressing pride in the impactful work being conducted by Carolina researchers.

The renewed funding extends the project’s timeline through 2031, highlighting the continued commitment to improving STEM education through AI advancements.
