Expert: US Air Force Needs to Foster Trust in AI, It’s Not Just a Sci-Fi Concept

The resignation of Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon highlights significant concerns about AI’s potential risks, as he noted that those developing AI fear it could pose existential threats by the decade’s end. In contrast, Michael Hiatt, CTO of Epirus, discussed counter-drone defense at the Air and Space Cyber Conference, emphasizing the urgency of real-time decision-making amidst drone threats.

Hiatt explained that, for ground personnel, the issue isn’t merely about cost asymmetry but a “magazine doubt”—the confidence in weapon systems capable of addressing mass drone attacks. Trust in technology is vital, especially when threats emerge rapidly.

He advocates for directed energy weapons as an effective solution that can minimize collateral damage and preserve limited interceptor resources. The path to integrating AI in counter-drone defense involves initially keeping humans in the decision-making loop, transitioning eventually to autonomous systems. However, establishing trust in these technologies poses challenges, especially with evolving AI regulatory frameworks.

Panelists, including Colton Wood from Digital Force Technologies, agreed that the military must adapt to counteract fast-moving adversarial AI, stressing the necessity for continuous evolution in defense strategies to keep pace with escalating threats.
