The space race is back in the spotlight, especially with SpaceX, now valued at $2 trillion post-IPO, leading the way in the industry. Rocket Lab is significantly trailing, despite its recent success of 94 launches, which is still fewer than SpaceX’s annual outputs.
However, a newcomer, Isar Aerospace from Germany, is shaking things up. Launching from Norway, Isar’s Spectrum rocket had a successful test that placed five cubesats in orbit, showcasing its potential in the small-satellite market. While it’s not as powerful as SpaceX’s Falcon 9, it marks a unique development in European space endeavors, as it’s a private entity based in Europe.
Isar poses a greater threat to Rocket Lab than SpaceX, with Rocket Lab’s European ambitions now more challenging due to Isar’s local presence. The dynamics of European space contracts could shift as companies weigh their options. For investors, Isar’s status as a private firm means it’s currently not an immediately available investment, unlike Rocket Lab.
