The recent Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) results have raised concerns about Hong Kong’s educational performance, showing a decline in rankings across key subjects like mathematics, reading, and science. These scores are reportedly the lowest ever recorded and indicate a troubling trend that started in 2012.
With the introduction of a creative thinking metric in 2022, Hong Kong scored below the OECD average, leading to warnings from education experts about the need for a change in teaching methods. Although the Education Bureau highlighted strengths in digital learning, the overall decline in core subjects is alarming, especially as Hong Kong slips out of the top 10 in science rankings.
While some attribute this decline to the impacts of COVID-19, the sharp decrease in scores since the last assessment suggests a need for deeper introspection and action from educational authorities to address these challenges effectively.
