Benin invests in transforming its cotton production into domestic clothing | Business

“Made in Benin”: A Fashion Revolution

Empowering Local Communities

In Parakou, Benin, Fatoumata Dosso’s DAF Collection embodies a vision that transcends fashion. The “Made in Benin” tag signifies a commitment to harnessing the nation’s cotton resources to not only elevate her business but also empower women in her community to pursue livelihoods in textile production.

A Response to Policy

Dosso’s venture aligns with the Beninese government’s strategy to limit raw cotton exports and bolster the production of finished goods. As Africa’s leading cotton producer, Benin accounts for 0.9% of global cotton production, cultivating aspirations for value addition beyond agriculture.

The Glo-Djigbé Industrial Zone

The Glo-Djigbé Industrial Zone (GDIZ), established through a public-private partnership, processes around 40,000 tons of cotton yearly and significantly contributes to the production of garments. This shift towards exporting finished products aims to counteract Benin’s current account deficit, fostering economic growth.

The Backbone of Cotton Production

Benin’s cotton industry thrives on a grassroots network consisting of over 183,000 producers across thousands of cooperatives, supporting rural livelihoods for millions. For smallholder farmers like Toussaint Bapetem, cotton provides consistent income and market access, making it a preferred crop over others.

Social Impact and Personal Stories

Bapetem’s earnings allow him to support his family’s education and manage debts, showcasing the economic importance of cotton farming. Meanwhile, Dosso’s commitment to local fabric production nurtures talents in weaving, creating jobs and promoting traditional textiles.

A Vision for the Future

As an advocate for “Made in Benin,” Dosso represents her country in international fashion arenas, aiming to expand her presence throughout major cities. One of her weavers, Chabi Baké, emphasizes the benefits of local production, expressing hope for sustainable community upliftment.
