Sterling Woman Transforms Farming Hobbies into a Business Opportunity – Shaw Local

Shannon Jacobs transformed her empty nest into a thriving farm business called Roots Market, located on 3.5 acres between Sterling and Morrison. After their five children grew up, she sought an outlet for her passion for farming, particularly her love for growing fruits and making jams and jellies.

Initially a hobbyist, Shannon envisioned a picturesque farm with an apple orchard and chickens. Following a friend’s suggestion, she began selling her excess jams two years ago, leading to the construction of greenhouses that now serve as a farmstand.

Roots Market, a certified cottage food operation, offers eggs year-round, produce, plants, flowers, and gift baskets, with her jams and jellies being the top sellers. Shannon manages the farm full-time, while her husband helps on weekends. They keep chickens and raise heritage breed hogs, incorporating windfall apples from their orchard into their diet.

Their location on U.S. 30 attracts customers from surrounding areas, making them a popular stop for travelers. Shannon aspires to inspire others to grow and create through her farm. Roots Market is at 21205 Lincoln Road in Sterling; more information is available on their Facebook page.
