Multilingual Teacher Seeks Donations for Multicultural Books at Ladson Elementary
LADSON, S.C. – Abigail Dehmey, a multilingual teacher at Ladson Elementary School, is seeking donations to enrich her classroom library with multicultural books, which she believes are essential for helping students connect with reading.
With approximately 200 multilingual students in grades one through five, Dehmey emphasizes the importance of diverse literature. She describes books as “windows and mirrors” for kids—providing insights into different cultures and allowing them to see themselves reflected in stories.
Dehmey has created a Donors Choose page to fund her goal of stocking books that represent various cultures within her classroom.
She teaches small groups of multilingual students for about 30 minutes each day, focusing on their reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in English. Dehmey notes that when students find books related to their personal experiences—like traditional recipes from their families—they become more engaged and motivated to read.
