The return of KCOB and Energy 106.7 to the airwaves is generating excitement in Newton, Iowa. Recently purchased by Riverfront Broadcasting, a company based in Yankton, S.D., these stations aim to restore local content and familiar voices that listeners have missed since their shutdown in June 2022.
The stations were previously owned by Connoisseur Media, which made significant staffing cuts, leading to community outrage and a decline in local news coverage. Ron McCarthy, the new general manager, emphasized the commitment to serve the Newton community by providing relevant news and programming.
Riverfront Broadcasting, run by Doyle and Carolyn Becker, plans to revive the stations in October. Carolyn highlighted their dedication to small communities and the importance of radio in connecting people and businesses. Randy Van Roekel, a beloved newsman, is set to return, further strengthening local broadcasting efforts.
Newton Mayor Randy Ervin praised the sale during a recent city council meeting, offering support for initiatives to promote local news through the stations.
