Dr. Sasha Hamdani, a psychiatrist from Kansas City, has released a new book titled “Too Sensitive: Rejection, Resilience and the Science of Feeling Deeply.” She will discuss the book at a Rainy Day Books event on Tuesday evening.
In her book, Hamdani explores how people process emotions across a spectrum. Some individuals have mood changes that closely relate to their environment, while others may experience “emotional blunting,” where they feel little change in their emotional state during typically emotional events. On the other end, some people experience intense mood swings in response to seemingly minor events.
Hamdani emphasizes the neurological basis for emotional sensitivity. She argues that it isn’t merely a personality trait but rather rooted in how different brains are wired. Key areas involved in emotional processing include the amygdala, which detects emotional threats, and the prefrontal cortex, responsible for decision-making and judgment. In those who are highly sensitive, the amygdala may be hyper-responsive, while the prefrontal cortex is under-responsive, leading to more profound emotional experiences.
Join Dr. Hamdani for her event titled “Too Sensitive” at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 8, at Unity Temple on the Plaza, 707 W. 47th St., Kansas City, Missouri 64112. More details can be found here.
