The recent OECD’s PISA survey reveals that English teenagers excel in maths, reading, and science, outperforming peers from many countries. While most nations experienced declines in scores, England and a few others maintained their performance, moving the UK into the global top 10. Notably, England showed significant improvement in science and excelled in reading, trailing only behind top performers from Singapore and China.
Despite England’s success, concerns surfaced regarding educational gaps and a plateau in achievements, with particular emphasis on disadvantaged pupils. Education minister Georgia Gould highlighted the necessity of ensuring high standards for all students. Critics, including shadow education secretary Laura Trott, warned against any reduction in academic emphasis, arguing that this could further disadvantage lower-income students.
The OECD’s overarching analysis noted a worrying global decline in academic performance, particularly in reading, attributing some issues to changing attitudes towards reading and digital distractions. Andreas Schleicher, the OECD’s education director, pointed to the adverse impact of devices like smartphones on sustained academic focus.
Overall, while England’s results spark optimism, they also underscore ongoing challenges within the educational landscape, especially for disadvantaged groups.
