While artificial stone’s durability makes it popular for countertops, it contains at least 90% respirable crystalline silica. This becomes airborne when the stone is worked on, leading to significant health risks, including irreversible lung damage.
One particular case involved Wilmer Ruben Martinez Paredes, a stone fabricator who died at 41 from silicosis. A jury in Los Angeles determined that manufacturers and distributors bore liability for not adequately warning about the dangers of cutting these products.

Silicosis is a progressive, irreversible disease that can lead to serious health issues, including the need for lung transplants. Recent trends show that younger workers are developing severe cases much earlier than expected.
Data from the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) reveals that 635 silicosis cases have been documented, with 124 requiring lung transplants and 35 fatalities. An estimated 100,000 stone fabrication workers nationwide may be at risk.
As the number of silica-related claims rises, legal disputes over insurance coverage have become more common. Some insurers are reducing their participation or raising premiums due to increased claims.
With growing awareness of the dangers of artificial stone, regulation is tightening. Australia banned artificial stone in 2024, and California is drafting policies to prohibit its fabrication and installation.
