Deaf Culture Week in Maine
Proclamation Announcement
Governor Janet Mills has declared the week of September 20-26, 2026, as Deaf Culture Week in recognition of Deaf culture and the heritage of American Sign Language (ASL).
Kickoff Event
The Commission for the Deaf, Hard of Hearing and Late Deafened will host its 35th Annual Tea in Celebration of Deaf Culture Week on September 17, 2026. This event will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Hall of Flags in the State House, Augusta, and is open to the public.
- Keynote Speaker: Clayton Marr III, a student activity coordinator at the Tennessee Schools for the Deaf, will be the keynote speaker.
Governor’s Statement
Governor Mills expressed that Maine’s Deaf community has significantly enriched the state through its language, culture, and contributions.
Support from the Department of Labor
Commissioner Laura Fortman emphasized the importance of harnessing the skills of individuals with disabilities and encourages employers to seek support from the Bureau of Rehabilitation Services for vocational training.
Awards Presentation
This year, the Commission will honor eight individuals and organizations for their contributions to Deaf culture in Maine, including:
- Promoting ASL and Deaf Culture Award: Lisa Penney, Donna Van Horn
- Citizenship Youth Award: Gavin Phelan
- Advocate for the Needs of the Deaf Community Award: Jennifer McCann, LCSW
- Outstanding Citizenship Award: Andrew Blethen
- Outstanding Commendation Award: Immigrant Legal Advocacy Project (ILAP)
- Interpreter Award: Cid Pollard
- Outstanding Service to the Deaf Community Award: Sammy Hargis
