University of Chicago scientists spearhead initiative to chart cosmic mass utilizing data from the South Pole Telescope.

Researchers at the University of Chicago have created the clearest map of mass in the universe using data from the South Pole Telescope. This study, involving scientists from 30 institutions, measures how gravity influenced the earliest light in the universe. The telescope’s location in Antarctica provides optimal conditions for observing the cosmic microwave background, the afterglow of the Big Bang.

The map represents the most sensitive measurement of gravitational lensing, helping scientists explore how matter is distributed in the universe. Lead author Yuuki Omori noted its significance, comparing it to a photograph with minimal background noise. This mapping enables new insights into cosmic evolution, particularly during the formative years of stars and galaxies.

Additionally, scientists hope to glean information about neutrinos, the universe’s most abundant particles, which may have influenced cosmic structure growth. The collaborative effort could also advance the search for primordial gravitational waves, potentially bridging the gap between gravity and quantum physics.

The research team is analyzing six years’ worth of data, which promises to further enhance our understanding of the universe’s history and composition.
