Saber CCO Tim Willits Attributes Layoffs to Over-Specialization in Gaming: ‘Studios with Several Hundred Staff Focused on a Single Game Will Face Challenges’

In a recent interview with PC Gamer, Saber Interactive CCO Tim Willits discussed the changing landscape of the gaming industry, especially with the arrival of major titles like “GTA 6.” He expressed concern that the industry’s focus on expansive games and specialized teams may lead to challenges, particularly in job security. Willits emphasized a strategy of diversifying projects to mitigate risks, pointing out that smaller games and remasters can finance larger ventures.

He believes that fostering a studio culture where developers can work on various types of games allows for more creativity and flexibility. For example, he highlighted “SnowRunner,” which started as a small experiment and evolved into a successful franchise.

While acknowledging current industry challenges, Willits maintains that it’s still a promising time for gaming, stressing the importance of adaptability and resource management. He also touched on the potential benefits of AI in game development, suggesting that its integration could be advantageous rather than detrimental.
