New Research Ship Added to UNCW’s Marine Science Collection

The University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) is enhancing its ocean research capabilities with the addition of a new 78-foot research vessel, the R/V Osprey. Built by All American Marine, this vessel aims to provide students with hands-on research and training opportunities at sea.

Chancellor Aswani Volety highlighted the importance of the vessel for students, stating that it will enhance their practical experience and prepare them for careers in science and environmental stewardship. The R/V Osprey will also support research in North Carolina’s coastal waters and contribute to the state’s Blue Economy through workforce development and applied research.

Ken Halanych, executive director of UNCW’s Center for Marine Science, noted that the vessel will facilitate discovery, education, and collaboration, addressing critical challenges in coastal and marine environments. UNCW plans to organize events to celebrate the addition of the R/V Osprey to its research fleet.
