Jaguar Land Rover’s Range Rover Electric: A Cautious Leap into BEVs
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has unveiled the Range Rover Electric, marking its entry into the battery-electric vehicle (BEV) market. Priced at £154,070 (approximately US$208,500) in the UK and US$138,000 in the US, this model boasts a range of up to 372 miles on UK testing cycles and can charge from 10% to 80% in about 22 minutes.
The electric variant comes at a premium, nearly £50,000 more than its internal combustion engine (ICE) counterpart, thus positioning it against high-end competitors like the Bentley Bentayga rather than mainstream options like Tesla or Rivian. JLR seems to prioritize brand prestige over technical specifications, as seen with BMW’s iX3 offering longer range at a lower price.
With twin motors generating 542-550 horsepower and 850 Nm of torque, the vehicle accelerates from zero to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds. Off-road features include an Integrated Traction Management system that adjusts motor speed quickly, allowing for significant inclines and wading depths. The SUV supports advanced charging options, including compatibility with Tesla’s Supercharger network.
JLR is adopting a flexible production strategy by sharing vehicle assembly lines between BEVs, hybrids, and ICE models, enabling adjustments based on demand. The launch faced delays due to motor performance requirements and external challenges, including a cyberattack that impacted production timelines.
Despite its high price point, JLR reports significant customer interest, with over 80,000 inquiries, suggesting the model is attracting new, previously non-Range Rover and non-BEV owners. The positioning reflects a cautious approach to the market, banking on the allure of luxury branding rather than competing solely on value against lower-priced alternatives.
