Chinese scientists have recently discovered a genetic barrier that complicates the crossbreeding of African and Asian rice varieties. This breakthrough could pave the way for developing high-yielding hybrid rice. While both rice types possess unique strengths, attempts to cross them typically result in sterile offspring with low yields.
The research team identified three specific genes that hinder successful reproduction and suggested a potential workaround. Their findings, published in the journal Science, indicate that overcoming this barrier could facilitate the creation of new ultra-high-yielding rice varieties.
Asian rice is known for its high yields and superior taste, while the potential for crossbreeding with African varieties could increase yields by over 10% compared to existing hybrid types. This research, led by Wan Jianmin from Nanjing Agricultural University, highlights a significant advancement in agricultural genetics aimed at enhancing food production.
