Scripps Oceanography Launches El Niño Research Hub
As El Niño conditions are expected to emerge soon, Scripps Institution of Oceanography has launched an El Niño Resource Hub. This hub provides articles addressing public inquiries about El Niño, its relationship to climate change, and its effects on weather and marine ecosystems. The hub also includes information on tracking data programs, a list of experts, a multimedia gallery, and historical research articles. Notably, NOAA predicts the upcoming El Niño could be one of the strongest on record.

Birch Aquarium’s Outdoor Adventures Return This Fall
Birch Aquarium will reintroduce popular outdoor programs this fall. Sunset Scripps Pier Walks kick off this month, inviting participants aged 9 and older for a guided tour of the usually-restricted Ellen Browning Scripps Memorial Pier. Tidepooling Adventures will follow, starting on November 7 for guests aged 6 and older.
- Sunset Pier Walks cost $35 for members and $40 for non-members.

Upcoming Book Explores University of California History
A new book titled “California Dreams: The Making and Remaking of the University of California” by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Miriam Pawel is set for release on September 29. The book discusses the UC system’s evolution and its impact on public policy.

Kevin Bacon Joins Symphony at Salk Celebration
The 30th annual Symphony at Salk, held on August 15, featured the San Diego Symphony and special guests, The Bacon Brothers, including actor Kevin Bacon. The event celebrated innovation in music and science at the Salk Institute.

Modernism and Architecture Week Returns in October
MHC La Jolla (formerly La Jolla Historical Society) will host its fourth annual La Jolla Modernism and Architecture Week from October 2-11. Highlights include:

La Jolla Playhouse Play Heads to Broadway
The La Jolla Playhouse’s 2022 play “Here There Are Blueberries” will debut on Broadway this fall. This documentary-style drama highlights a photographic album that reveals the lives of those at Auschwitz during World War II. Co-written by Moisés Kaufman and Amanda Gronich, it adds to the Playhouse’s impressive history of producing Broadway-bound shows.
Mt. Soledad Ceremony to Honor Vietnam War Veteran
On September 26, the Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial will hold a ceremony to posthumously honor Corporal Larry Eugene Smedley, a Medal of Honor recipient for his heroic actions during the Vietnam War.
