Houston City College (HCC) has recently secured a $103,000 investment from NRG Energy Inc. to enhance its apprenticeship programs aimed at supporting students in the expanding energy sector. Announced on August 17, this funding will advance HCC’s offerings in instrumentation and controls, combining classroom instruction with practical employer-driven training.
The program prepares graduates to effectively operate, maintain, and troubleshoot automated systems essential for power generation and industrial functions. HCC Chancellor Margaret Ford Fisher emphasized the vital role of industry partnerships in shaping educational pathways that align with contemporary workforce demands.
In addition to the NRG investment, HCC also received a $17 million grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies for expanding apprenticeships and skilled trades training, as well as a $1 million grant from Lowe’s Foundation for local training programs in high-demand skilled trades. These initiatives position HCC as a pivotal player in addressing workforce needs in Greater Houston.
