Kick off summer savings with complimentary bus rides for children!

Free Bus Travel for Under 16s in the West Midlands

From today until the end of August, children aged 5 to 15 can travel for free on most local buses in the West Midlands, providing families with a cost-effective way to enjoy summer outings amid rising living costs.

Overview of the Initiative

This initiative is part of the government’s Great British Summer Savings scheme, which aims to alleviate financial pressures by reducing costs on various child-friendly activities such as:

  • Restaurants offering discounted children’s meals
  • Reduced tickets for theatres and cinemas
  • Affordable entries to attractions like adventure centers and theme parks

Mayor’s Statement

Mayor Richard Parker emphasized that every family deserves enjoyable summer experiences without financial strain. He stated, “This offer of free bus travel is a simple step to help our young people see their friends, explore our region, and make the most of the school holidays.”

Notable Attractions

Families can take advantage of the bus service to visit several local attractions:

  • Cadbury World: Located along the longest bus route in Europe, families can experience a century-old service covering 43 km in Birmingham.
  • Woodgate Valley Country Park: Accessed via the 23 or 24 bus routes, the park offers activities like pony trekking, cycling, and a chance to see farm animals.

Government Support

Just days before this announcement, the government revealed plans to cap bus fares at £2 starting in January, ensuring that all travelers can save on transportation costs. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander highlighted that this initiative is designed to provide families “room to breathe from the cost of living squeeze.”

Broader Discounts and Offers

  • James Murray, financial secretary to the Treasury, reiterated the importance of accessible leisure activities, stating that families should not miss out on attractions due to financial constraints.

  • Rob Parkinson, chief executive of the Family Holiday Charity, noted, “Travel should be filled with anticipation… We welcome the commitment to free public transport for children this summer.”

Explore Offers

To assist families in navigating available discounts, the government has launched an interactive tool that displays local deals, simplifying the process of finding affordable family activities.

Overall, this initiative not only enhances travel options but also supports families by making summer experiences more affordable and accessible throughout the West Midlands.
