A tropical disturbance off Florida’s west coast has been designated as Invest 91L, with increasing chances for development. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported Saturday afternoon that the likelihood of the system developing into a depression is now at 30% over the next two days and 40% over the next week. This is an increase from earlier estimates of 20% and 30% respectively.
The system, extending from the northeastern Gulf of Mexico to just off northern Florida, is expected to move slowly northward or north-northwestward in the coming days. Heavy rainfall is anticipated along the Florida Gulf coast, southern Alabama, and southwestern Georgia. Residents in these areas should monitor the situation closely.
If Invest 91L develops into a named storm, it will be referred to as Bertha. Current observations indicate a broad surface low forming in the eastern Gulf, but winds are light and associated thunderstorms remain disorganized.
