Big Sky Summer Shootout: A Celebration of Local Culture

The Big Sky Summer Shootout, an annual exhibition showcasing local films and photography, returns for its third year on September 29 at The Waypoint in Big Sky. This festival celebrates the community’s culture through short documentaries and humorous films, providing a unique gathering for both year-round and seasonal residents.

A Unique Community Showcase

“The stories that are told are kind of unlike anywhere else,” noted Erik Morrison, founder of the Big Sky Shootout. “They’re very specific to the community, so that is a really special thing.”

This year’s films will be screened twice at 6 p.m. and again at 8 p.m. with tickets priced at $26. Leading up to the main event, various pre-festival activities have been scheduled, including a Shootout Rerun Party on August 31 that featured fan-favorite works from previous festivals. Additionally, a free trivia night will take place on September 16 at 7 p.m., allowing locals to test their knowledge of past films and personalities, with prizes including 2026 passes for Second Season and a Shootout prize basket.

Embracing Diversity in Storytelling

“Every year, the types of stories that people are choosing to highlight and share just keep getting more diverse,” Morrison emphasized. “It keeps capturing different aspects of our community, which is everything I’ve ever hoped for with this event.”

Originally launched 11 years ago, the Big Sky Shootout aims to celebrate the mountain culture of Big Sky. Showings are known for their lively atmosphere, with attendees enthusiastically cheering for friends appearing in the films.

“Maybe they’re in the film, maybe they’re not, but there really is a sense of ownership,” Morrison added.

Awards and Festivities

On September 29, festival attendees will have the opportunity to vote for their favorites during the Live People’s Choice Awards, participate in a Second Season pass raffle, and win door prizes. Following the main event, an awards ceremony and after-party will begin at 9:15 p.m., with over $3,000 in cash and prizes awarded to winners. Additionally, attendees are encouraged to compete for the Best Dressed Award by wearing creative outfits for a photo opportunity on the Shred Carpet.

Submissions Open

The Big Sky Shootout is currently accepting submissions until midnight on September 13. To qualify, entries must have been filmed between May 1 and September 2026 and must closely connect to the Big Sky community and mountain culture. Films can be up to five minutes long, and photographers may submit up to six images.
