The majority of B.C. drivers fail to properly secure pets while driving, according to ICBC.

The recent ICBC survey reveals concerning trends among pet owners in British Columbia regarding vehicle safety. Despite over half of B.C. drivers having traveled with pets in the past year, only 36% secured them with a restraint. Nearly two-thirds admitted to rarely using restraints, with some allowing their pets to sit on their laps.

ICBC stresses that not restraining pets endangers everyone in the vehicle. Common reasons for not securing pets include the belief that trips are short, pets being well-trained, and the misconception that restraints are unnecessary. While 33% of pet owners using restraints opted for crates, only 16% used harnesses.

Additionally, 24% of survey respondents admitted to leaving their pets alone in cars, justifying it with claims about short durations and safe temperatures. Experts warn that even brief periods can be dangerous as temperatures inside vehicles can rise rapidly.

Kim Monteith of the BC SPCA urges pet owners to secure their animals while driving and to take them along whenever they leave the car to prevent heat-related distress or fatalities. The survey, conducted in May, included responses from 404 pet owners.
