Proofpoint Introduces AI Tool for Compliance Investigations

Proofpoint has unveiled Prism Investigator, an advanced autonomous investigations platform tailored for compliance and legal teams. This innovative tool is part of Proofpoint’s Digital Communications Governance suite.

The platform addresses the challenges faced by organizations inundated with increasing amounts of communication data across collaboration tools, archives, mobile channels, and various business systems. It effectively links communications and business records to reconstruct events and create comprehensive case narratives for investigations.

Prism Investigator is particularly beneficial for industries that are heavily regulated or frequently involved in litigation, where internal reviews and regulatory inquiries necessitate the rapid assembly of extensive, fragmented records. The system aims to transition investigations from traditional methods relying on keyword searches, exports, and manual interpretations to a more automated approach focused on event reconstruction.

Proofpoint touts the platform’s source-agnostic capabilities, allowing it to operate seamlessly across different repositories and record types within a unified workflow. In its initial launch, Prism Investigator will support various data sources, including Proofpoint Archive, with plans for broader integrations in the future.

At the core of the product are AI agents built on Proofpoint’s Nuclei technology. These agents are designed to analyze communications and related records, identify patterns, construct timelines, and generate case summaries using natural language processing workflows.

The platform also maintains an audit trail of investigator inputs and AI reasoning. This feature aims to assist legal and compliance teams in elucidating the rationale behind conclusions reached during regulatory reviews or litigation processes.

The launch is timely, considering that companies are grappling with rising compliance costs and heightened scrutiny regarding how they monitor communications and manage AI usage. Proofpoint referenced industry research indicating that nearly two-thirds of firms anticipate an increase in compliance expenses, while governance and ethical considerations related to AI are among the primary challenges businesses foresee facing.

For compliance teams, the hurdles extend beyond the sheer volume of data; they also encompass the widespread dispersal of this information across disparate systems. Messages, records, logs, and trading information commonly exist within separate tools, complicating the establishment of a coherent timeline without engaging in tedious manual collection and review.

Investigation Workflow

Prism Investigator efficiently connects both structured and unstructured data without necessitating the export and re-ingestion of content prior to analysis. According to Proofpoint, this platform can correlate messages generated by individuals and AI systems with contextual signals, such as trade data, logs, and other system activities.

This methodology signifies a broader transition in compliance technology as providers evolve from mere archiving and searching to implementing systems capable of interpreting sequences of events. For organizations under regulatory scrutiny or involved in disputes, the allure lies in the potential to reduce the time taken to transform raw records into a documented account of events.

“Our customers are consistently pressured to operate more swiftly while maintaining precision and defensibility,” remarked Harry Labana, Senior Vice President & General Manager of the Digital Communications Governance Business Unit at Proofpoint.

“Prism Investigator replaces disjointed, manual investigations with autonomous, explainable AI that reconstructs what transpired, the significance of those events, and the individuals involved. This allows teams to transition from gathering evidence to achieving comprehension with improved speed and assurance,” Labana added.

Broader Portfolio

The new platform also incorporates contextual signals from Proofpoint’s extensive security and insider risk portfolio. This integration is designed to help compliance, IT, and security teams evolve from mere alerts to a comprehensive understanding of potential risks across various systems and records.

Proofpoint has positioned the launch as an enhancement to its existing Digital Communications Governance business, which focuses on archiving, supervision, and compliance monitoring. By adding an investigations layer, the company aims to streamline a segment of the workflow that traditionally relies heavily on legal teams, external advisers, and manual review processes.

Prism Investigator is slated for release in mid-June, with limited early access available by invitation for select customers and partners. The initial rollout will support multiple data sources, including Proofpoint Archive.

Proofpoint boasts a strong client base, working with over 80 of the Fortune 100 companies, more than 10,000 large enterprises, and millions of smaller organizations.
