EU Agrees to Ban AI Tools for Sexualized Deepfakes

In a significant move, EU member states along with negotiators from the European Parliament have reached a consensus to prohibit the use of artificial intelligence in creating non-consensual sexualized deepfakes, as announced by the Cypriot EU Council presidency on Thursday morning.

In parallel, there are plans to streamline other regulations related to artificial intelligence (AI) to fully harness the technology’s economic potential within Europe.

Before these changes can be enacted, the agreement must receive formal endorsement during the plenary session of the European Parliament and from EU member states, a process typically seen as a mere formality.

Should the proposal receive approval, companies will have until December 2, 2026, to ensure their systems comply with the new regulations.
