Alabama has been recognized as one of the top 10 states for business in the U.S. by Area Development magazine in its 2026 report, ranking No. 7 overall. This marks an improvement from the previous years when Alabama was ranked No. 8.
The report assesses states based on 20 key factors influencing business location and economic development. Notably, Alabama achieved three No. 1 rankings in:
- Property Tax Environment
- Overall Cost of Doing Business
- Labor Cost Competitiveness
Additionally, Alabama performed well in several other categories, including:
- Business Incentive Programs (Ranked No. 3)
- Regulatory Environment (Ranked No. 4)
- Workforce Training Programs (Ranked No. 5)
- Energy Availability & Grid Capacity (Ranked No. 6)
Governor Kay Ivey attributed this success to the state’s efforts to attract investment and prepare workers for available jobs, emphasizing that Alabama is “open for business.”
In 2025 alone, companies announced $14.6 billion in new investments and created over 9,000 jobs in the state. The Alabama Department of Commerce has invested around $300 million in site development and workforce preparation, which has been crucial for economic growth.
The Area Development report highlights the state’s focus on creating a favorable environment for businesses, making it a competitive choice for investment and development.
